I’ve always been a packing minimalist when it comes to travel, but I’ll admit, there have been a few times where it came back to bite me. Over time, I’ve picked up some useful tricks to help me remember the essentials such as utilizing a vacation checklist in the Notes app on my iPhone whenever something small and fleeting pops into my head; I will also stick a small dry erase board to the back of my front door for jotting down last-minute items the night before like toothbrush, phone charger, contact solution etc. (By the way, here’s the dry erase board I use if you want to utilize the same trick.)
Nothing ruins a trip faster than being stuck in the cold without the right clothing— Oh, the flashbacks of being a boot in the Navy in Great Lakes, Illinois and the culture shock I was in for coming from the Texas gulf coast.. Before then, I didn’t even know what a parka was, let alone the importance of layering clothes. Fortunately, I've learned multiple tips and tricks to keep me warm since then. This fall vacation packing list will help you avoid rookie mistakes that could really throw a wrench in your travel plans, keeping you prepared and ready for anything the weather has to blow at you.
Car Rental TIP: If your planning for an uphill drive or traveling through tricky terrain don't forget to rent a vehicle with 4-wheel drive.

**Check the Weather!
I know it’s obvious but it’s very easy to overlook especially if you get tied up with last minute errands right before the trip. Checking the weather before going on a fall vacation is essential to ensure you pack appropriately and plan your activities effectively. Fall weather can be unpredictable, with possible drastically varying temperatures, rain, or even early snowfall in certain regions. Being prepared will not only help you stay comfortable but also allow you to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or sightseeing without surprises. It can also impact travel plans, especially in remote areas where roads might close due to weather conditions. A little preparation goes a long way in making your fall getaway enjoyable and stress-free!

A hard-shelled suitcase is essential for a fall trip because it offers superior protection against unpredictable weather, ensuring that your belongings stay dry and secure, even in rain or snow. Its durability shields delicate items like electronics or souvenirs, while its structured design helps you pack efficiently. These compression packing cubes complement this by maximizing space, allowing you to organize and compress bulkier fall clothing like sweaters and jackets. Together, they provide a practical, organized, and weather-resistant solution for any fall adventure.

A sturdy pair of waterproof boots is essential for fall trips. Whether you’re hiking through damp woods or walking around town, boots with good insulation and non-slip soles will not only help protect your feet and ankles but also keep them warm and dry.

You'll be happy you brought them! Opt for moisture-wicking, thermal socks to keep your feet warm. Wool socks are ideal because they’re breathable and can insulate even when wet. Also consider bringing extra regular socks so you can double-up if your feet get cold. You'll also be able take off the extra socks if it warms up throughout the day.

Leggings or thermal base layers are perfect for wearing under jeans or pants, especially if you’re going to be outdoors. They provide warmth without adding bulk, making them perfect for layering. I absolutely love these fleece-lined pantyhose leggings that allow you to be able to wear a cute skirt while still staying warm. They look exactly like regular pantyhose and are pretty convincing to the unknowing eye.

A well-insulated, waterproof jacket is a must for fall travel. Look for jackets with a hood to protect against wind and rain. For colder regions, a parka or down-filled coat can add extra warmth without sacrificing mobility. Packing a lightweight hoodie is also never a bad idea.

Gloves and Handwarmers
Keep your hands warm with a pair of lightweight, thermal gloves. Even in mild weather, temperatures can drop quickly, especially in the evening. Handwarmers are also a nice little fall/winter adversary that provide instant warmth, keeping your hands comfortable in cold weather when temperatures drop unexpectedly. They're small, portable, and can be easily tucked into pockets or gloves for extra heat during outdoor activities. (the link I have provided also includes feet warmers too!)

Hats and Beanies
Packing beanies or hats for a fall vacation is important because they help retain body heat, especially in cooler weather. Since much of your body heat escapes from your head, a warm hat can make all the difference when temperatures drop. Beanies take up very little space and are easy to pack, making them perfect for outdoor activities like hiking or sightseeing. This stylish beanie has a ponytail slot for your hair!

Miscellaneous Essentials
Waterproof Backpack: A durable backpack with a built-in rain cover will help protect your belongings, especially if you're carrying electronics, snacks, or layers to change into throughout the day. The one I linked is also a great carry-on backpack that has a place to keep and extra pair of shoes, has a built-in USB port, and has multiple pockets.
Portable Umbrella: Always keep a small, travel-size umbrella handy in case of unexpected showers.
Chap Stick: Walking around in the crisp air can really dry your lips out. Don't forget to stick one in your purse before you travel!
Lotion: The dry air can do a number on your skin and even cause your knuckles to crack and bleed if you let moisturizing get away from you. A small travel size cocoa butter lotion is my go to that you can throw in your purse.
